Ombre Vanilla Cake



For my sisters birthday I wanted to try out this ombre cake, and I had my doubts, but it turned out really well!

I found the vanilla cake recipe from the Rachael Ray Show, by Buddy Valastro, which can be found here.

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups cake flour*
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup vegetable oil or 1 1/2 sticks of butter (3/4 cup)
2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
4 extra-large eggs, at room temperature
1 cup whole milk

*If you do not have cake flour, you can substitute, see below!

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350°F
Mix the flour, sugar, melted butter or vegetable oil, baking powder, vanilla and salt with a mixer.

*If you do not have cake flour, with some research I found that for every cup of flour, take two tablespoons out, and replace it with two tablespoons of cornstarch!

While mixing, add the eggs, one at a time. 

Finally, add the milk.

From here, I separated the batter in to four different bowls of equal amounts.

I did about 40 drops in the darkest colour, and about 20 in the next colour, 5 in the next and one or two in the lightest colour.

I used a 7-inch spring form to bake my cakes in.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes - my cakes took 30 minutes.

Make sure to cool on a cooling rack!

After the cakes have cooled, prepare icing, or use store bought icing.
Start with the darkest layer, and put a layer of icing on top, and then put the next colour on top, and repeat. Then cover with icing!

I decorated my cake with flowers - if you do this make sure no one eats them!
