Chocolate Heart Cookies

These cute cookies are made from a Martha Stewart recipe.

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled), plus more for parchment
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (spooned and leveled)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2/3 cup packed light-brown sugar
1 large egg

Mix together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
Stir together butter, sugar, and egg.
Add flour mixture to butter mixture, and stir to combine.
Knead until a dough forms.
Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Roll out dough to about 1/4 to 1/8 of an inch.
Cut out heart shapes.
Place cookies 1 inch apart on parchment-lined baking sheets, and freeze until very firm, about 15 minutes.

Bake until firm and fragrant, about 8 minutes.
Let cookies cool completely on baking sheets set on wire racks.
For the Icing, it used a water and icing sugar mixture, with a few drops of red food colouring.
I then put the icing in a piping bag, and did an outline of the cookie, then filling in the middle.
After I placed the heart candies on top.
I used some full hearts, and some broken hearts.

I also made a butter icing also - I think this tasted better.
  ½ c. butter
1 ½ c. icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Semi-melt the butter, and mix in the icing sugar and vanilla, as well as a few drops of red food colouring.

Then I spread the icing on the cookies this a knife.
